How could it be otherwise, this page was not going to stay out of another of the competitions that Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have kept over the past years: Who is the biggest fraudster to the Spanish Tax Agency.
Today, January 22, 2019, it has been known that Cristiano Ronaldo has accepted his guilt, for which he will face a sentence of 23 months in jail and 18.800.000€ (£16,200,000, $21,200,000) of fine, to which we must add 365.000€ (£315,000, $411,000) to avoid prison.
Before this, on June 23, 2017 it was confirmed that Leo Messi would have to pay a 2.000.000€ (£1,725,000, $2,254,000) fine after being sentenced to 21 months in prison. He also had to pay 225.000€ (£194,000, $254,000) to avoid prison.
In this table we wanted to keep the line of the whole web, breaking down data by games played and by minutes, to get an idea of the magnitude of the fraud carried out by these two stars of sport… and finances.
In this way, we can say that for every minute that Leo Messi played with FC Barcelona between 2007 and 2009, he defrauded the Spanish Treasury about 400€ (£345, $450), which is more than 30.000€ (£26,000, $33,800) in fraud per game.
Cristiano Ronaldo far exceeds this figure, since he has defrauded more than 800€ (£690, $900) per minute played and almost 70.000€ (£60.000, $78,900) per game played, that is, more than twice Leo Messi.
But of course, these players are characterized by scoring many goals and distributing assists to their teammates. How much have these goals and assists cost to all the Spaniards?
In the case of Leo Messi, for each goal scored between 2007 and 2009, Messi defrauded almost 50.000€ (£43,100, $56,300), while for each assist he defrauded more than 107.000€ (£92,000, $120,000)
If we go to the figures of Cristiano Ronaldo, for each goal scored with Real Madrid between 2011 and 2014, CR7 defrauded the Spanish Tax Agency more than 65.000€ (£56,000, $73,200). For each assist given in that period, he exceeded 230.000€ (£198,000, $260,000) in tax fraud.
Apart from the fines reflected in the table, it should be added that both players have had to contribute extra amounts to regularize their fiscal situation. We will expand this table when we know more information about it.
